Shirley Chisholm became the first Black woman to run for the Democratic nomination for president, inspiring Black women across the nation. Following the hearings around Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas and the treatment of Anita Hill, Black women were pivotal in voting for candidates committed to women’s rights. This contributed to a surge in female representation in Congress, with Carol Moseley Braun becoming the first Black woman elected to the U.S. Senate.

Black women overwhelmingly supported Barack Obama, with over 95% of Black female voters supporting him in both elections. Their turnout and support were critical to his success, especially in key battleground states.

Black women played a decisive role in electing Democrat Doug Jones over Roy Moore, showing up at record rates and voting over 98% in his favor. Their turnout was a major factor in tipping the scales in this close race.

Black women were instrumental in securing key victories for Joe Biden, particularly in swing states like Georgia, where Stacey Abrams and other organizers mobilized voters. Their turnout was essential in flipping traditionally Republican states.
